He earned his degree in Education at Hungarian-German at Eötvös Loránd University in 1966. He was the associate of the Hungarian Ballet Institute from 1966 to 1981 and was the general director from 1972 to 1981. He was the associate lecturer of the Institute of Germanic Studies of the Faculty of Humanities of ELTE, subsequently he became a senior lecturer and later reader here. He became the head of the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies at ELTE and later he held the position of Vice-Dean for Economic and Foreign Affairs from 1984 to 1987 and the Vice-rector for Research from 1987.

Deputy Minister of Culture from 1989 to 1990, and then at the Ministry of Education then State Secretary at the Ministry of Education from 1990. He became the head of the freshly formed Institute of Germanic Studies of ELTE and the dean at the Faculty of Humanities from 1992 to 2006, when he coordinated the renovation of Trefort Kert and the relocation of all the departments to Trefort Kert Campus. He held the position of  State Secretary for Higher Education and Science for István Hiller from 2006 to 2010. His research area was the local German dialectology and national ethnography.

His major work, the critical edition of the codex of Mosonszentjános and the linguistic map of the Germans living in Hungary.
